This shows a selection of members’ patriotic postcards from the Vancouver Postcard Club’s June 2020 meeting. Most are Canadian postcards. If this video is not showing or working for you, the Youtube link is: https://youtu.be/Z8CbVU1j10U
One postcard’s date and place is a bit of a mystery, but it is believed to be from an official visit. Please contact the Club if you recognize the place, or the event.
In 2017, in celebration of Canada’s 150th Anniversary, our January Postview newsletter featured articles on Canadian patriotic postcards and cards from other Canadian anniversaries. This issue is free for you to download and read here.
The recognized authority on Canadian patriotic postcards is Michael J. (Mike) Smith. His books, The Canadian Patriotic & Heraldic Postcard Handbook 1897–1945, Volumes 1 and 2. are out of print, but may be available at a nearby library or possibly second hand. If you are interested, he has an article online, “Patriotic Postcards”, at The Wayback Times, published June 24, 2017. He lists a number of topics that can be included in the definition of Patriotic Postcards. There was some discussion about this at our meeting.
Speaking only for myself, for instance, I include royalty associated in some way with Canada, and a now much wider definition of Canadian historical leaders and figures, symbols, sites and events including those officially recognized by the Government of Canada. Older postcards may illustrate or reflect these topics, but they were not all intended or thought of as patriotic cards at the time. (M. Diane Rogers)
The next Vancouver Postcard Club meeting –a Zoom video meeting – will be July 12th, 2020 – 11:30 to 1:30 pm PDT, 2:30 to 4:30 EDT. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. Please contact the Club and we will send you the link. Let friends or family know they are welcome to contact us too.
