After the British Columbia Centennial – thoughts on art, heritage, advertising and politics in post-1958 BC postcards, M. Diane Rogers.
At the Vancouver Postcard Club’s November meeting, historian Fred Hume began a discussion on modern art postcard collecting with great sports examples. Peter White’s book, It Pays to Play: British Columbia in Postcards 1950s – 1980s, ably illustrated scenes of post Centennial tourism, progress, and leisure activities across the province. I hope to foster more discussion on ‘collecting modern’ by showing a number of my own favourite postcards from BC’s latest 50 years.
Illustration examples sent:
Whaletown, Cortez Island, B.C., postcard, from a sketch by D. Borland.
Granville Island Bandstand, 2000, a postcard by Kevin Schmidt, then artist in residence, False Creek Community Centre, Vancouver, BC.
